'Creative Dance Lab' - an exloration of innovative adavus
in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi'

by Veena Murthy Vijay (senior dancer and choreographer from Bangalore, India). Open to dancers, teachers and students of all experience levels. All art lovers are welcome to attend and be part of this unique dance experience.
Veena Murthy Vijay is an exponent in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. She is a disciple of Korada Narasimha Rao and has learnt from other eminent gurus like Nagabhushan, Lokaiah, Kittappa Pillai, Narmada, Venkatalakshamma to name a few. Her father was her main inspiration to learn Kuchipudi. In adddition to Kuchipudi, Veena has also learnt the Yakshagana style of dance. She has identified the influences of Yakshagana (a dance form) on Kuchipudi and has tried to understand the connection between the two styles. An article in The Hindu has referred to Veena as a "relentless learner". She is a strong believer of the "guru-shishya parampara" of learning.
Veena runs Rajarajeshwari Kalaniketan in Bangalore where she trains many aspiring dancers in both Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dance styles. She has choreographed ballets on socially relevant themes. She has started a foundation – AIM (Artistes Introspective Movement) – training for diplomas in music and dance. A member of SAARC Cultural Committee, Bangalore (1982), Veena takes active part in NGOs working for development of art and art awareness.
Dress code: Please wear comfortable clothing that enables movement (tights, long top/kurtha, and dupatta). Preferably NO jeans, skirts, and T-shirts. Hair to be tied back neatly in a plait or ponytail. Can wear light makeup, bindi, and light jewelry. We will be taking photographs and videos. So please plan accordingly. Please bring a water bottle.

Vanitha Suresh is an accomplished singer and teacher. She started her initial training on the Veena (South Indian stringed instrument) under Srirangam G. Rangarajan and R. Srinivasan, at the age of 9. She did her vocal training under Srirangam Kannan and Smt. Akila Siva for a brief period, and spent several years under the tutelage of Shri. T.N. Bala (a disciple of Madurai Mani Iyer) in Philadelphia. She has performed in several cities in the US and in Trichy/Chennai including the December Music Festival, and is the co-inventor of Taal Acharya - a unique visual metronome software. Vanitha is currently undergoing advanced training under the tutelage of world renowned musician/composer/teacher Sri Chitravina N Ravikiran, and Sri. Chitravina Narasimhan.
Dress code: Comfortable clothing that enables sitting cross-legged on the floor (preferably Indian dress). We will be taking photographs and videos. So please plan accordingly. Please bring a water bottle.
