A Review of Samskriti Foundation's 25th Anniversary Inaugural Concert - 25 Songs with Abby V
by Meera Venkatraman
Samskriti Foundation founded by Shoba Natarajan in Chicago celebrates its 25th year with Raga Reverb - an online global festival of music and dance. Shoba Natarajan is an accomplished Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer. She has been training several students in the classical performing arts of India like music and dance, over the years, in the US, through her Samskriti Foundation. Raga Reverb promises to be an exciting journey of discovery into various facets of select ragas, as interpreted by artistes from across the globe, with each episode dedicated to one raga.
This concert of Abby V is a curtain-raiser to the entire series. And Abby V has given Raga Reverb a splendid start. Starting with Tulsidas's Ganesha Shloka in Shuddh Saarang - Gaayiye Ganapati Jagavandana, he traversed several genres such as Carnatic classical, Hindustani classical, film music in multiple languages, Ghazals and so on. The versatility of Abby V is astounding. He keeps you glued to your monitor (or mobile), completely transfixed by his melodious voice and effortless singing. It is clear that he has a strong foundation in classical music, and this stands him in good stead in other genres also. Felicity with language is another big plus. From the masters of yesteryears like K V Mahadevan to modern day maestro, A R Rahman, Abby V selected and sang masterpieces that evoke nostalgia, and the thrill of listening to exquisite, high quality music. Our singers from the past, whether Mohammad Rafi or TMS, and our film music directors have shown why Indian music, whether classical or film, stands on its own unique, high pedestal. A Ghazal medley showcased Abby V's versatility. He also sang a Raga medley where a snippet of the raga itself plus a classical or film music song was sung in brief. These ragas will be among those chosen for elaboration in subsequent episodes, individually, in the Raga Reverb series, online.
Abby V is a social media sensation of sorts and it is not difficult to see why. As he sang the immortal Desh raga song, Abby, Nee inbam serka maattaya?! , sounded most appropriate. We look forward to this brilliant singer's emergence in the coming years as an all-rounder, as he is an award-winning musician and composer.
